There’s no denying that CBD (Cannabidiol) is one of the biggest buzzwords of the year. It’s being sold everywhere we turn and is in everything we buy (or so it seems). Although it’s infiltrating the wellness world, it’s still a confusing topic for many when it comes to pre-employment drug screens. To clear up any confusion, here’s a breakdown:

What is CBD?

CBD is a chemical compound from the cannabis plant, used in products such as oils and edibles to provoke a sense of calm and relaxation. The cannabis plant is made up of 2 main parts – CBD and THC. CBD is the non-psychoactive part of the plant, meaning you won’t feel “high” like you would with THC.

Will it show up on a drug test?

Here’s the thing – only one CBD drug has been approved by the FDA so far. When a drug goes through the approval process, the FDA verifies the amount of each ingredient being used in the product. Therefore, since not all CBD products have been approved by the FDA, there could potentially be trace amounts of THC in them. According to WBOY News, Richard Fredrick used CBD oil for a month to ease his knee in shoulder pain, causing him to fail a drug screen for his new job. All in all, since we don’t know exactly what’s in most CBD products, users should be mindful when purchasing them.

Important Takeaways:

  1. While CBD itself shouldn’t include THC, we can’t speak for those products that haven’t yet been approved by the FDA.
  2. It’s important to understand the risk that comes along with using CBD, knowing there’s no guarantee that using these products won’t raise a red flag on a drug test.
  3. Under a Department of Transporation-mandated interpretation, a positive test for THC will not be excused by the fact that the product was described as being CBD or for medical marijuana purposes.
