Tooling Manager

Our client, a large automotive manufacturer, is looking to add a Tooling Manager to their team!

Summary of Responsibilities

To provide tool and die support to all other departments to ensure customer schedules and projects are completed timely. To assist in overall management of the Tool and Die Department and assist the Production Department in meeting safety, productivity, quality and housekeeping goals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage all facility activities and personnel reporting to this position
  • Maintain effective communication and coordination with all internal customers, plant management and team members; maintain positive team member relations; listen to issues and concerns and provide timely feedback
  • Promote and practice “safety first” by immediately addressing any hazards, defective equipment or unsafe conditions within the department
  • Oversee and direct Tool & Die team members on all three shifts in safe, quality-minded and productive manner with a sense of urgency to attain production priorities as scheduled
  • Maintain effective department communications through a prioritized work list, daily pre-shift meetings, individualized communications and department meetings
  • Maintain and continuously improve department organization and housekeeping standards
  • Determine, achieve and improve productivity, quality, environmental, health and safety goals
  • Support new program launches
  • Provide motivation and a results-oriented environment
  • Determine, achieve and improve productivity, quality, environmental, health and safety goals
  • Review all major department projects from start to finish to insure proper techniques are being used
  • Sign all departmental purchase orders to insure items are needed and best quality for least cost
  • Interface with vendors and material suppliers to insure purchase of proper materials
  • Utilize lessons-learned philosophy in continual improvement activities
  • Schedule and update preventive maintenance and work orders as needed
  • Conduct performance evaluations of Tool & Die personnel as specified by company goals
  • Ensure all team member documentation is maintained
  • Report on status of departmental projects as required
  • Complete correspondence, forms and reports in Microsoft Office and other required programs
  • Handle confidential information on a regular basis
  • Encourage safety and housekeeping practices and lead by example
  • Participate in Continual Improvement activities
  • Adhere to customer requirements, Business Operating System and company policies
  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • Able to calculate figures and amounts, such as percentages and proportions
  • Able to use computer and software as required
  • Must have excellent human management skills, be decisive and lead by example

Education, Skills and Experience

  • Proven employment record of excellent managerial and organizational skills
  • Excellent die repair, die maintenance and diagnostic skills
  • High school diploma with Tool and Die Journeyman status
  • Minimum of 5 years in the trade
  • Knowledge of departmental processes and procedures to include:
    • transfer tooling and systems
    • check fixtures
    • holding and welding fixtures
    • automated equipment
    • proven die design review skills
    • CAD and SURFCAM programs
    • CNC operations
    • Preventive Maintenance procedures
